James began dancing in Canberra with Quantum Leap youth dance company in 2001 under the direction of Ruth Osborne and Mark Gordon. He went on to graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006. During his time at the VCA he worked with choreographers Becky Hilton, Neil Adams, Anna Smith, Stephanie Lake and Garry Stewart.

James has performed for Cadi McCarthy Company in Shambles and for Natalie Cursio in With a Bullet, the album project and in a work choreographed by Bec Reid. James has taught at Stompin Youth Dance Company and at Launceston College. He was nominated as Dancer to Watch the 2007 Dance Australia Critics' Choice.

In 2006 James joined Tasdance to begin working with Raewyn Hill. In January 2007 he travelled to New Zealand to further work with Raewyn on the first development of her work Vespers of Sorrow and returned to begin a contract with Tasdance to perform Mercy: A dance for the forgotten, Parenthesis and One for Sorrow, Two for Joy. Since joining Tasdance, James has worked with Fiona Reilly, Shaun Parker, Anna Smith, Kate Denborough, Trisha Dunn, Natalie Weir and Natalie Cursio, touring works to New Zealand, New York, throughout Tasmania and regional New South Wales and Victoria.
